Does “20/20” vision mean “perfect” vision?

September 23, 2023

It’s a frequent misunderstanding that having 20/20 vision means having "perfect" vision; rather, it just indicates that you have sharp visual acuity. However, 20/20 vision is not the best you can get. You have 20/15 vision if you can read the letters on the line beneath the 20/20 line without getting closer to the chart. In other words, you can see what an ordinary person can only see from a distance of 15 feet to 20 feet. You could even have 20/10 vision, which would suggest that your vision is twice as clear as someone with 20/20 vision.

Having 20/20 vision merely indicates that you are able to recognize the line of letters on a standard eye chart that a person with standard vision can see from a distance of 20 feet. Without a thorough eye exam, it is unlikely that a wide range of visual problems unrelated to basic refractive defects will be identified and treated.

Undiagnosed Vision Issues’ Symptoms

Some eye problems are easy to notice, like crossed eyes or a lazy eye. But most eye issues are not easy to see, especially in kids, and this makes them feel confused and sad. Grown-ups get frustrated too. Sometimes, these kids are thought to have problems with learning, even if it’s really their eyes that need help.

Watch for the symptoms of eye problems, which include:

  • Getting a lot of headaches
  • Your neck hurts
  • Having trouble while concentrating
  • Not understanding what you read
  • Seeing two things when there’s only one
  • Feeling like things are spinning
  • Not being able to focus on things close up for long
  • Blinking and rubbing your eyes a lot
  • Not being able to tell how far things are

Does the ability to read the 20/20 line allow you to skip regular eye exams?

No, even if you have the ability to read the 20/20 line, that doesn’t mean you should skip regular eye exams. After all, your doctor performs more than just a simple visual acuity test; they assess your overall eye health, search for indicators of changing vision, and identify conditions like glaucoma and cataracts that may not yet be manifesting any symptoms. This is why, depending on your age, health history, and visual requirements, you should see an eye doctor at least once every year or two.
