Double Vision: When Is The Condition Serious?

June 13, 2023

Double vision, also referred to as diplopia, is a condition in which a person sees two images of the same object, which may overlap, intermingle, or be side by side. This eye condition may be isolated or connected to something more serious.

Monocular vs. binocular diplopia

Your doctor will categorize your double vision as monocular, i.e., affecting one eye, or binocular, i.e., affecting both eyes. When you use only one eye and have double vision, you have monocular diplopia, and it might resemble a shadow. When both eyes are open at once and you see two images which disappears on closing one eye, then it is binocular diplopia.

Horizontal diplopia vs. vertical diplopia

If you have binocular diplopia, your double vision may be experienced either horizontally, i.e., the double images lie side by side, or vertically, i.e., the double images lie up and down. Which type you have, could point towards the likely cause.

Diplopia’s signs and symptoms

Diplopia can be associated with other symptoms besides seeing double, such as:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Droopy eyelids
  • Weakness in the eyes
  • Pain when moving your eyes
  • vision that is hazy or distorted in one or both eyes
  • On rare occasions, the eyes may also appear "wandering" or "cross-eyed"

Causes of double vision and its treatment

Prior to treating double vision, the most crucial step is to identify the exact cause of the issue. The cause of double vision may occasionally be eliminated, or if not, the condition may be managed.

  • This condition may be brought on by a condition called myasthenia gravis, which is treatable with specific medications.
  • Uncontrolled blood sugar in diabetic patients may be a contributing factor to double vision. Your doctor may treat your condition with proper control of sugar levels and/or insulin.
  • Double vision can occasionally be brought on by weak eye muscles, and if this is the case for you, surgery can be used to treat the condition.
  • Double vision could also occur as a part of  a brain stroke.

Sadly, there are instances where this condition cannot be improved. In this situation, there are still treatments that can make it easier for people to cope with it, such as wearing an eye patch or purchasing special eye wear with a prism lens to lessen the effects of double vision.
