Why Rubbing Your Eyes Could Be Dangerous: Germs And Your Eyes

Most people frequently rub their eyes throughout the day without even giving it much thought.

Whenever we are tired, our eyes feel itchy or dry, or there is something stuck in one of them, the simplest way to feel better is to rub our eyes a little. But unfortunately, doing so helps the germs travel from our fingers to our eyes.

The germs that live on our hands, skin, and fingernails:

Our body is home for millions of microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses, and numerous of these microorganisms reside on our skin, hands, and nail beds. Washing our hands frequently is crucial, as we can unknowingly transfer these germs to our face and eyes through touch. These germs are directly introduced into our eyes when we rub them, which could result in eye infections and diseases.

Our eyes’ natural defense system:

Our eyes have built-in natural defenses against infections and germs. For instance, lysozyme, a protein that obliterates bacteria, is present in tears. The eyelashes and eyelids also aid in shielding our eyes from germs, dust, and other contaminants. However, persistently rubbing our eyes can interfere with these natural built-in defenses, leaving us more susceptible to infections.

Keep germs out of your eyes:

Though your eyes are susceptible to viruses and bacteria that cause infections,  they do have a defense system. Your eyelashes are excellent at blocking out irritants. Blinking also results in a fresh layer of protective tears being applied to your eyes. Unfortunately, if you don’t take precautions to keep your eyes free of germs, these defenses could be compromised.

Follow the below tips:

  • Trim your nails regularly to avoid bacteria building up under them and spreading to your eyes when you touch them.
  • Regularly wash your hands with soap and water, especially just before inserting or removing your contact lenses.
  • Never exchange makeup brushes, contact lens cases, or eye drops with anyone .
  • Doorknobs, faucet handles, counter tops, light switches, remote controls, keyboards, and your phone are all examples of high-touch surfaces that should be cleaned frequently.
  • Before going to bed, remove your contacts to prevent contaminating your eyes and depriving them of oxygen.
  • Towels, washcloths, and other linens that come into contact with your face should be washed frequently.
  • When working in dangerous situations or around chemicals, cover your eyes with goggles or safety glasses to protect them from external contaminants.
