Introduction

People believe that the symptoms of the eyes like pain, vision changes, or color change, may always be due to ocular conditions. However, eye symptoms may be due to various underlying medical conditions.

Health Problems That Your Eyes May Indicate

Our eyes are important for cherishing the external world. We should take good care of our eyes. Any problem in the eyes should be dealt with promptly. A sudden reduction in vision or any of the symptoms should be examined by the ophthalmologist or eye specialist. Symptoms in the eyes not only occur due to the conditions directly related to the eyes such as glaucoma,cataract, or eye infections, it may also be the result of an underlying medical conditions.The following conditions may cause eye symptoms:

Jaundice: Yellowing of the eyes and skin is due to the accumulation of bile. The liver manages the metabolism of bilirubin. Thus, any abnormal deposition of bilirubin may indicate a liver problem.

Stroke: Blood vessels are supplied to the retina for oxygen and nutrients. Due to stroke, these vessels get damaged or blocked resulting in blind spots in the vision. There is also a loss of side vision due to a stroke.

Hypertension: People with hypertension are at increased risk of developing glaucoma and cataract. Bending or kinking of the ocular blood vessels indicates hypertension.

Diabetes: Changes in the vision or leaky vessels in the retina may be caused due to diabetes.These symptoms may sometimes appear even before the patient is diagnosed with diabetes.

Thyroid disorders: Thyroid disorders, for instance, the overactive thyroid gland, may result in ulgingof eyes. Graves disease cause the swelling of ocular tissues leading to eye-bulging,

Cancers: Problems in the eyes indicate various types of cancer. Double vision and headache may be due to leukemia and lymphoma. Cancers of skin and other tissues such as breast tissue may also cause the problem in the eyes.

Aneurysm: Aneurysm, the leaking of blood vessels due to bulging, may result in headache and vision problems.

Stress: The twitching of the eyes indicates excessive and prolonged stress. Dry eyes are common in people who work on mobile or the computer for a prolonged period. Too much straining the eyes may result in eye redness.

Dyslipidaemia: People with high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, especially when they are below the age of 40 years, may have a blue or yellow ring surrounding the cornea. Cholesterol may also deposit in the retinal blood vessels.

Brain tumor: Brain tumor may increase the pressure inside the skull that may also affect the optic nerve. A person with a brain tumor may experience the altered size of the pupil or double vision.

Arteritis: Inflammation of the blood vessels nourishing the eyes may cause ocular symptoms. The symptoms include double vision, blurred vision, and loss of vision.

Lyme disease: Lyme disease may result in inflammation of the optic nerve. The patient may experience an increase in floaters.

Multiple sclerosis: Multiple sclerosis may also cause inflammation of the optic nerve. Patients with this condition may have double vision, ocular pain, and blurred vision.

Other conditions: Symptoms in the eyes such as drooping of eyelids, dry eyes, and reduced vision may be due to myasthenia gravis, sarcoidosis, rheumatoid arthritis, sickle cell anemia, sexually transmitted disease, vascular disease, deficiency of Vitamin A, and Sjogren’s syndrome.

Hence The Saying Is Quite True That Just As EYES ARE THE WINDOW TO THE MIND, Similarly EYES ALSO OPEN THE WINDOW TO VARIOUS SYSTEMIC DISEASES OF THE BODY.
