Subconjunctival Haemorrhage

December 28, 2020

Human eye is a vital organ and is a gift to perceive the beauty of the world. When we look at the eye, it’s easy to demarcate that we have two parts as white and black/brown moving part. White part is sclera and is covered by clear tissue known as conjunctiva. It acts as a protective layer to the sclera. Eye comprises of numerous blood vessels and nerves.

Subconjunctival haemorrhage appears as a red spot in the eye due to rupture or leakage of the blood vessel between conjunctiva and sclera. It is quite often, that the patient contacts the eye doctor as a matter of concern for red discoloration of the eye.

Symptoms

Usually it is asymptomatic, apart from scary red eye look. Mild irritation may be associated with bright red patch in the eye.

Diagnosis of Subconjunctival Haemorrhage is made on the basis of clinical symptoms and ruling out other eye problems.

What causes Subconjunctival haemorrhage?

  • Causes can be as simple as Sneezing and coughing.
  • Sometimes straining/vomiting or due to heavy exercising like weight lifting
  • Eye rubbing or trauma from contact lenses
  • Infections like conjunctivitis, clotting disorders, use of anticoagulants.
  • Trauma to the eye or head or any other eyelid or eye surgery.
  • Long term steroid treatment can predispose to leakage of blood vessels
  • Certain medical conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure can cause red patch in the eye.

If you see change in vision or floaters, weeping or discharge from the eye, contact your eye doctor immediately.

Do I need treatment for Subconjunctival haemorrhage?

Clinical diagnosis is usually enough for this condition and any kind of imaging or lab test is not recommended in this scenario. Just to rule out bleeding disorders, blood test can be recommended, if patient is unaware of his medical condition.

Ice packs and lubricant artificial tears can soothe eye but no known eye drop can repair leaked blood vessel. No other treatment is required and red spots clear from the eye, within next 1 to 3 weeks of initial onset. As the condition resolves, you may see changes in the eye colour from red to pink or yellow.

As precautionary measure, always wear protective gear while playing or doing activities that can cause injury to the eye. Avoid rubbing of eyes, after trauma, as it may delay the healing process.
