Color Blindness

Color Blindness

As with recent advances in technology, we read and see a lot about pixels of resolutions of screen displays. Now when we talk about eyes, our eyes cannot be compared in terms of pixel of a camera. However, if still you want to compare, our eyes see much like a 576-megapixel camera would see. Human eyes are way more complex than the recently developed digital cameras today, and yes we do have flaws sometimes in our vision apparatus. Every 12th male and 200th female is affected by color blindness. It is a genetically inherited defect, the gene responsible for color blindness is present on the X chromosome and that’s why more males are affected. Sometimes apart from genetic reasons, diseases like Glaucoma, Macular degeneration, drug medication can also be responsible for color blindness.

How do we actually see colors?

The retina is the part of the eye, which acts as a screen, and an image is formed there. It has two kinds of light-sensitive cells; Rods and Cones. Rods cells are basically responsible for light and dark adjusting and help us to see in low and bright lights, while cones help us perceive a variety of colors. Cones cells are of three types; Red, Blue, and Green. In the case of color blindness, one of the cone cells is either absent or not functioning properly.

Types of Color Blindness

  • Protanopia (missing red cones, red blindness)
  • Deuteranopia (Green blindness)
  • Tritanopia (Blue blindness)
  • Achromatopsia (Total color blindness)

How do I know, If I have Color blindness?

There are certain clinical tests, performed by your eye doctor to determine color blindness. A simple test is done; while one of your eye covered and a series of test cards (pattern made up of multiple colored dots and representing a number) are shown to you by uncovered eye, can help in understanding color defect. It is not a painful condition and color blind people adjust to their problems in society and do well in their careers.

Some famous musicians and celebrities have suffered color blindness, yet they achieved great heights in their professions. Certain career paths, where distinguishing colors are required, may not be suitable for color-blind people for example graphic designing, electrician, Pilot, Drivers, motormen etc.

There is no known cure for color blindness, yet contact lenses and glasses are available with filters to reduce color deficiencies.
